The decaying city

Published by missjennalynn at 5:48 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

So how about a breath of fresh air from questions about the universe and politics… lets talk about my oh so healthy city of Saint John! Unfortunately, there is no breath of fresh air there.

I have lived outside of Saint John three quarters of a year, and I could not be anymore ecstatic! The uptown area (we are talking central, right smack in the middle of the LOVELY city) has to be the worst part of drug addicts roaming the streets, panhandlers scouring near convenient stores and run down bars. The list goes on of the generation of scummy people shooting up cocaine (yes, ew!) and dilaudids. You know, half the time when I see these panhandlers, prostitutes, garbage pickers etc. I feel sorry for them, UNTIL they come up to me, breathe down my neck and ask for change. It is disgusting that this city is not doing enough for people in serious need. Any time that I was living in the central part of Saint John… I would come across a crack head, high off their tree and talking to themselves! I would always shake my head and meant to write something about it like I am right now.

It REPULSES me that the city spends more of their time, effort and money making the city beautiful for the tourists. Anyone that lives uptown or even goes uptown know that a quarter of the year, the tourists come from the cruise ships. Sure we have proud heritage buildings, but what else is there? You won’t see the tourists going around the grimey parts of Saint John, which is most of the city.

Being out in Rothesay (about a 10-15 minute drive from Saint John) has made me feel a lot better, physically and mentally. Sure, I am in a type of town where everyone is conservative, snotty family types but at least I don’t have to breathe in the smog from the largest refinery in Canada. Thank you Irving, thank you for your continued support of pollution!

I just think the city has so much potential and history, but no one wants to stay in Saint John. I know I can’t wait to get out of here after living there for only a couple of years on my own.  The city needs a lot work done, but people can’t be bothered to help revive this city.

I know this is not the only place in the world like this… but it is a shame that this is one of the many disgusting, depressed and run down places on the planet. I am ashamed to say that I am from Saint John in the first place. I will be making visits back here, but don’t count on ever staying there again. You can drive up to our capital city of Fredericton and really see the difference in people’s positive attitudes and fresh, healthier air. I can assure you that the majority of people in Saint John are not worried about staying green, helping the planet, and get an education. Those people are worried about where they’re going to get money from to feed their drug habit. And those people are worried about where they are going to sleep the next night. It is heartbreaking to watch it happen to several people here.

That is all, I just had to rant thoroughly about something I despise, very much!
